Botox and Filler Aftercare: What You Need to Know for the Best Results

Whether you've recently received Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, or dermal fillers, proper aftercare is essential for achieving beautiful, natural-looking results. While these treatments require little downtime, what you do during the first 24-48 hours can significantly impact your outcome.

At Lotus Wellness & Medspa in Aurora, Ohio, we want every patient to maximize their results and protect their investment. Here are the most important do's and don'ts after getting Botox and fillers.

What to Do After Botox

1. Stay Upright for 4 Hours

Remain sitting or standing for at least four hours after your Botox treatment. This helps prevent the neurotoxin from migrating to unintended muscles.

2. Gently Move the Treated Muscles

For the first hour after treatment, practice gentle facial expressions such as raising your eyebrows, frowning, and smiling. This may help the product settle into the targeted muscles.

3. Follow Your Provider's Instructions

Every patient is unique. Always follow the specific recommendations provided by your injector regarding your treatment plan.

4. Be Patient

Botox does not work immediately. Most patients begin seeing results within 3-7 days, with full results appearing around 10-14 days after treatment.

What NOT to Do After Botox

Avoid Touching or Massaging the Area

Do not rub, massage, or apply excessive pressure to treated areas for at least 24 hours. This helps prevent product migration.

Skip Intense Exercise

Avoid strenuous workouts, hot yoga, running, and heavy lifting for 24 hours. Increased blood flow may contribute to swelling and potentially affect results.

Avoid Excessive Heat

Stay away from saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and prolonged sun exposure for the first 24-48 hours.

Limit Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol can increase bruising and swelling. It is best to avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before and after treatment.

Delay Facial Treatments

Avoid facials, chemical peels, microneedling, facial massages, and other skin treatments for approximately two weeks unless advised otherwise by your provider.

What to Do After Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers require slightly different aftercare than Botox because swelling and bruising are more common.

Apply Ice as Directed

Cold compresses can help minimize swelling and discomfort during the first 24 hours.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water supports your body's healing process and can help optimize filler results.

Sleep on Your Back

Try sleeping with your head elevated and avoid sleeping face-down for the first few nights.

Expect Mild Swelling

Some swelling, tenderness, and bruising are normal and typically improve within several days.

Attend Your Follow-Up Appointment

A follow-up visit allows your provider to evaluate your results and ensure everything is healing appropriately.

What NOT to Do After Dermal Fillers

Avoid Excessive Pressure

Do not massage or manipulate the treated areas unless specifically instructed by your injector.

Avoid Intense Exercise for 24-48 Hours

Heavy exercise can increase swelling and bruising.

Limit Heat Exposure

Saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms, and excessive sun exposure can worsen swelling during the healing process.

Avoid Alcohol and Blood-Thinning Supplements

Alcohol, fish oil, vitamin E, and certain supplements may increase bruising. Follow your provider's recommendations regarding these products.

Don't Schedule Major Events Immediately

While many patients look great right away, swelling and bruising can occur. Plan filler treatments at least two weeks before weddings, vacations, photoshoots, or special events.

When Should You Call Your Provider?

Contact your injector immediately if you experience:

  • Severe pain

  • Significant asymmetrical swelling

  • Skin discoloration that worsens

  • Blistering

  • Vision changes

  • Signs of infection such as increasing redness, warmth, or fever

Although complications are rare, prompt evaluation is important.

How Long Do Botox and Fillers Last?

Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin

  • Results appear in 3-14 days

  • Typically last 3-4 months

Dermal Fillers

  • Results are immediate

  • Longevity varies from 6 months to 2 years depending on the product and treatment area

Regular maintenance treatments help preserve a refreshed, youthful appearance.
